What is EMDR Therapy?

If you’ve done some research on different types of therapy, you’ve probably come across Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR for short. EMDR is an extensively researched psychotherapy method that’s been proven to effectively help people recover from trauma and other distressing experiences (like PTSD, depression, anxiety, and panic disorders).

Instead of relying on talk therapy or medications, EMDR uses a patient's own rapid, rhythmic eye movements. These eye movements weaken the effect of emotionally charged memories of traumatic events.

In an EMDR session, your therapist will move their fingers back and forth in front of your face and ask you to follow these hand motions with your eyes while asking you to recall a disturbing event. This will include the emotions and body sensations that go along with it.

Eventually, your therapist will guide you to shift your thoughts, helping you change the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the traumatic experience.

EMDR can help children and adults of all ages with a wide range of challenges, including: anxiety, panic attacks, dissociative disorders, depression, grief and loss, pain, performance, PTSD, and more.

Just as your body has a natural process to heal itself from physical trauma, EMDR shows that, with a little stimulation, the mind too can heal itself from psychological trauma.

Drishti Bend utilizes many types of therapeutic models as we recognize there are many powerful forms of therapy for different clients.
